Vale Leigh Box

It is with heavy hearts that we learned of the passing of Leigh Box earlier this week. Our deepest condolences to Ian and family, we are thinking of you in this difficult time.

Leigh made an enormous contribution to Vermont Cricket Club, starting off as team manager for son Ian’s Under 12 Junior team and becoming treasurer of the VCC Junior Club for several years.

Once Ian started playing senior cricket in 2004/05, Leigh moved straight into the role of VCC President, which he held for 4 years until 2007/08.

Leigh showed great passion and love for the club, doing a mountain of work behind the scenes to improve the VCC for players and supporters alike. This was never more evident during his time as the club President, when Leigh expertly guided the club through a challenging season that saw the redevelopment of the club rooms and teams playing at temporary grounds.

He was a “hands-on” president who was happy to share a drink with all, but also the first person to help with clean up the next day.

Leigh ran the show in his own unique and understated way and was always true to himself, treating everyone with kindness and respect and never raising his voice in anger.

Above all else, Leroy was generous to a fault. He loved the players, and the players loved him back.

One indelible memory occurred on a cricket trip to Sydney, when Leigh walked in, out of the blue, to a rock star like reception and proceeded to pay for everyone’s drinks over the next few hours.

A treasured memory for Leigh was the VCC’s most recent McIntosh Shield First XI Premiership in 2006/07, in his 3rd year of presidency. Knowing Leigh, he would be watching from above and hoping that we can add another this year.

Leroy, it’s been a privilege and an honour.

Rest in Peace mate.
